What is Crohn’s?

Crohn’s is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)

I’m Quinn Wyatt and I have Crohn’s. This is not something I ever lead with. In fact, in the past, I only discussed it with my doctor and those closest to me. It is not a disease that is talked about openly like diabetes or cancer and so often people don’t understand it. Perhaps you are reading this book because you have recently been diagnosed with IBD (irritable bowel disease). Perhaps you know someone who has been diagnosed. Maybe you had no idea what IBD was before reading this book. Whatever brought you here I want you to know that this group of diseases is prevalent and on the rise. Approximately 1.6 million Americans are diagnosed with some form of IBD, Crohn’s or Ulcerative Colitis.

Here are the basic and not-so-cheerful facts. These diseases are lifelong conditions that cannot be cured. They have a drastic effect on the lives of those diagnosed. They can provide symptoms in the body anywhere from the oral cavity down to the anus. The cause is not exactly known but it seems to be a combination of genes, environment and the immune system. There are a variety of symptoms that range from diarrhea to fevers. Most people are diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 35.

Now here is the really good news is that these diseases can be treated. There are many forms of medication, naturopathic treatments and surgical options that can help keep them in remission. There has also been a drastic increase in funding for the research of IBD which means new information and treatments are always on the horizon.
